Meet the illustrator

Students were given the opportunity to meet Miss Mistry, illustrator and Rushey Mead art instructor, during a special event in the library during lunchtime on Friday 5th April.

Miss Mistry’s first picture book, ‘You’re Safe With Me’ by Chitra Soundar, has been shortlisted for the prestigious CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. Students were keen to know how Miss Mistry became a children’s book illustrator, the process she undertakes to create her illustrations and especially how long it takes her to finish a piece.
Miss Mistry, a former Rushey Mead student, emphasised that being an illustrator takes hard work and determination. Her “visual voice” is influenced by many cultures and she is particularly fond of incorporating Indian patterns and designs in her work.
Students marvelled over Miss Mistry’s other original artworks which they were allowed to handle, and she provided them with colouring sheets of her outlines so that they could draw some of their own patterns and designs. We hope Miss Mistry wins the Greenaway Medal in June.
